2010 Trip and Event Schedule

2010 Schedule updated March 10  by ba

Newest updates:   May San Rafael River (UT)

Go To Current Month

THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN CANOE CLUB is an organization for paddlers in the Colorado area covering all aspects of paddle sports from flat water to white water with an emphasis on the open canoe.

RIVER PERMITS Many of the week long spring and summer trips are on Permit Only rivers and the permit request process usually begins in January or February. RMCC often has a Permit Party in early January to strategize rivers and dates for the coming year. See Richard Ferguson’s River permit page for updated details on Western rivers.

RMCC trips are cooperative adventures shared by members and their guests. The entire group is collectively responsible for the trip, and each participant is individually responsible for judging their own qualifications, skill level, and safety on the rivers being run. The trip coordinator may refuse to allow a participant on a trip, but the responsibility for judging one's own qualifications lies solely with each trip member. The trip coordinator also may restrict trip participants to RMCC members only.

Call in advance! Trips can fill up. Organizers need time for planning.

To add trips and events to the schedule, or to make changes, please click on the following link to send us a message. Please include information for each column, and keep everything very brief! Announcements are limited to club-related trips and events, or general boating events of some interest to canoeists. Include the name of the hosting organization for non-RMCC events.

Links to other descriptive web pages are encouraged. If you would like to show flow gagesthe flow gauge, please include a working link or station number.

Swiftwater Rescue Class

Jim and Karen Baker-Jarvis

303-989-4833

Sunday May 2 RMCC is planning to have a Swiftwater Rescue class run by an ACA Swiftwater Rescue Certified Instructor: Sammer Elias.  The class will be run from 8:30 AM to 5 PM in the Golden area on Clear Creek.  The cost will be $120/person plus ACA insurance fee unless you are an ACA member.  Since this is a safety class, the club has decided to subsidize part of the fees for members that have recently been trip coordinators and then any funds left over will be used to help out other members with the priority decided by club officers.  Subsidies will range from $100 and down, but only one per family unit, to be determined by the club officers, given the available funds.

The class will require some swimming in the river in cold water, wetsuits or drysuits required plus helmets and PDFs.

To register please contact Jim or Karen Baker-Jarvis (Bjcanoedance@earthlink.net) (303-823-5532)  ASAP ; we will assemble a list of interested parties and you will be contacted  about a month before the class and then told  what your portion of the registration fee will be.  All fees will be due April 22 or 10 days before the class date.

May 29-31

San Rafael River (UT)

Karen Amundson

303-734-9823

 Class 1+

ACA insured trip. This 17 mile stretch of river is just north of I-70 from the Sinbad exit NW of Moab.  It flows through the Little Grand Canyon, and we will do a relatively late Saturday start and find hikes to spread it over 2 nights of remote camping.  We want the flows to be between 150 and 450cfs.  Backup plan if the water is too low-or-high will be either the Dolores ending in Gateway or the Niobrara, depending on the group’s skill level and desire.  Link to http://waterdata.usgs.gov/usa/nwis/uv?site_no=09328500 for water levels and to http://southwestpaddler.com/docs/greenut12.html for some more description.

Sept 25-26

Ruby-Horsethief Canyon, Colorado River, CO & UT

Bill Ashworth

720-352-6456

Class I

This is family-friendly trip through a spectacular 25 mile canyon section of the Colorado in western Colorado/eastern Utah.  This will be an ACA-sanctioned outing which requires EITHER ACA membership OR a $5/person registration fee.

We'll be meeting at the Fruita or Loma boat ramps (see the links below for directions and descriptions of all the locations mentioned here) at 8:00am and run the shuttle to Westwater. We're hoping to camp around the mouth of Mee Canyon (roughly halfway down) early enough on Saturday to avoid afternoon winds and allow canyon hiking and exploration.  We'll be off the river early on Sunday for the drive back to the Denver area.  Carpooling, partner-matching, and group camping Friday night are possible but contact me as soon so we can make this happen.
